Retrieval and Agent Intelligence Summer Internship
Huawei Research and Development UK Limited Overview
Huawei’s vision is a fully connected, intelligent world. To achieve this, we work to inspire passion for basic research around the world. Our combined passion drives development across the global innovation value chain. Huawei has the largest Research and Development organization in the world with 96,000+ employees in research centers around the globe. In the UK, we already have design centers in Cambridge, London, Edinburgh and Ipswich. We continue to explore and define new research directions and new services. We have expanded our collaborations with academic researchers; researched new network architectures, integration of communications and key enabling technologies; and developed the fundamental theories of these technologies. We invite you to join us on this exciting journey and drive your career forward.
Project Background
As Agent technology evolves from single-turn capabilities to long-horizon task execution, building scalable and reusable Agent capability systems has become a critical challenge. As an Agent-oriented development platform, openJiuwen is actively constructing next-generation infrastructure centered around the integration of knowledge, skills, and memory.
To accelerate the development of the openJiuwen ecosystem in Europe, we plan to recruit a group of outstanding students with strong computer science fundamentals and engineering skills for a three-month summer internship program. Interns will participate in real-world Agent system development, focusing on core areas such as Skill construction, Agent workflow design, and memory & retrieval enhancement.
This program not only enables interns to deeply understand the engineering paradigms of Agent systems, but also drives the continuous evolution and ecosystem expansion of openJiuwen.
Objectives
Build reusable Agent capabilities: By involving interns, we can develop capabilities such as skill extraction, summarization, verification, registration, memory (including multimodal skill memory), retrieval, and selection, thereby accumulating a batch of high-quality skills and workflow templates, and improving the reusability and scalability of agent capabilities.
Advance core capabilities of openJiuwen: Enhance the end-to-end capability loop of openJiuwen in real-world scenarios, including knowledge retrieval, skill invocation, and task execution.
Explore long-horizon Agent paradigms: Validate and optimize Agent performance in multi-step tasks, focusing on planning, execution, and state evolution.
Cultivate talent in Agent systems: Provide hands-on experience in real system development to help interns build structured understanding and engineering expertise in Agent systems.
Plan
Month 1: Foundation & System Understanding
Learn the architecture of openJiuwen, including Agent workflows, Skill mechanisms, and retrieval modules
Get familiar with development workflows and build simple task-oriented Agents
Produce basic technical documentation or examples (English preferred) and contribute to community content
Month 2: Capability Development & Optimization
Develop along specific directions (e.g., Skill construction, retrieval enhancement, workflow design)
Implement reusable Skill modules or Agent workflows
Validate and optimize performance in real-world tasks
Month 3: Integration & Deliverables
Complete system integration and improve stability and execution quality
Conduct performance analysis and case validation (e.g., multi-step task execution)
Produce technical documentation and practical summaries as reusable assets
Ideally, we expect interns to participate throughout the full three-month program. However, flexible arrangements can be made based on individual circumstances.
Deliverables
Before the end of the internship, we will organize a final showcase and technical sharing, including:
Building an openJiuwen Agent Showcase page to present selected projects and use cases
Publishing high-quality Skills and Agent workflows to the open-source community
Producing technical blogs or reports to expand openJiuwen’s influence in Europe
Outstanding projects may be further incubated into long-term research or engineering directions
