Job Summary
At Huawei Ipswich Research Center we design and develop a range of active and passive components in III-V semiconductors. To expand our world leading design capability, we are looking at for a Device Simulation and Design Engineer with experience in automated optical simulation of III-V components through to producing designs to be fabricated and tested to meet the project needs. This role will span from developing simulation techniques for these devices through methods like self-consistent electrical and optical gain calculations, mode solving and propagation through interfaces, finite difference time domain (FDTD) propagation etc. The job will involve using existing tools along with building, benchmarking and delivery of automated simulation tools using in-house and open source resources. Machine learning and associated inverse design approaches should be explored for optimising complex structures with many degrees of freedom. Project specifications should be analysed and designs developed to exceed these requirements before being passed to fabrication. Finally, test data analysis is an important aspect of verifying project success and calibrating the models, so refinement of the models is expected. As such, automation of data analysis is also necessary to complete the loop.
Key Responsibilities:
- Developing simulation tools for III-V photonic devices utilising design techniques such as FDTD, FEM, machine learning and inverse design
- Delivering literature and progress reports on the tools
- Training of other design team members and providing documentation on use of the simulation tools
- Collaborate with colleagues in Design, Fabrication, and Test departments to ensure designs can be laid out, processed and experimentally verified
- Design experiments to assess the limitations of process tolerances by correlating models to experimental data.
- Using simulation tools to contribute to the design and development of a range of active and passive III-V photonic components.
This job description is only an outline of the tasks, responsibilities and outcomes required of the role. The jobholder will carry out any other duties as may be reasonably required by his/her line manager. The job description and personal specification may be reviewed on an ongoing basis in accordance with the changing needs of Huawei Research and Development UK Limited.
Person Specification:
-
Required:
- A PhD in Physics, Electrical or Electronic Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- A minimum of 5 years in the photonics field, with a robust background in industry or academia, focusing on the development of III-V photonic devices.
- Deep knowledge of optoelectronic device physics, alongside familiarity with simulation tools and processes. Specifically, experience in simulation and design of photonic devices. Proficiency in electromagnetic simulations using tools such as FDTD, FEM, Mode solvers, and multi-physics modules (e.g., COMSOL, VPI)
- Knowledge of inverse design methodology applied to simulation.
- Exceptional skills in data analysis, along with outstanding presentation and communication abilities.
- Experienced in Python or similar programming languages for efficient simulation, automation and data analysis.
- Ability to build and document modelling and simulation tools. Ability to communicate technical results to project meetings, reports and publications, enabling clear and impactful dissemination of complex information.
- Ability to work independently, manage time and record allocation on multiple projects.
-
Desired:
- A track record of publication and active participation in conferences, complemented by strong public speaking skills, reflecting an ability to share insights and results with the wider community.
- Experience in the characterisation of optoelectronic devices, understanding of test data and relating back to simulation output.
- Active and passive III-V design experience for waveguides, lasers, modulators, couplers etc.
- Ability to work as a team and communicate with different job function.
